Not What They Told Us...Branding and Colors in Sports?

Colors are a big part of branding in general. Coke is red. Pepsi is blue. And as marketers we're constantly told how important branding is. But it seems pro sports teams, at least in the US, aren't buying into this.

Pro teams, especially in the NBA change their uniforms and colors constantly. The Celtics are always green but pretty much the other teams are mixing their colors and wearing multiple alternative jerseys. Even teams like the Lakers who were historically purple and gold are no longer really branded with these colors.

Why do you think this is?

I think it's because they feel the increased sales in jerseys by encouraging fans to buy more than one style of their favorite players is more valuable than the long term branding of keeping their colors and uniforms more consistent for better branding.
