IMO FB research is a required skill. This doesn't mean spending money on ads and creating sophisticated funnels. It only means to be able to access and use FB's audience tools. But I do think most IMers should spend at least 4-5+ hours learning about FB audiences and use the tool on an ongoing basis.
FB audiences are really markets. Marketing is about matching products/services with markets. And IMO the best marketing is finding a market THEN create products and services for that market.
Neil Patel has a pretty good article on using FB targeting. I suggest doing a little more research on his major topics in the article.
