Fun, weird, wild and wacky marketing ideas

I love creative marketing. If you know of any original ideas post them below, including marketing humor, creativity and interesting trivia.

Here's an idea I cam across a while back. If you have a "boardwalk" business on the beach have some flipflops engraved on the bottom with a message like,
Follow me to Kurt's Pizza!

Then when people walk on the beach wearing them your ad will be inprinted in the sand with every step.

I think this could also work in ski resort towns where there's always snow on the ground. Could you have tire chains or something that goes on car tires to "print" a business card in the snow every time?

My billion dollar marketing idea: Well done potato chips and crackers. You know how when you grab a handful of potato chips and pick out the dark ones first? Make the entire bag like that. Same with crackers. I had a package once that was golden instead of white and they tasted a lot better. No fancy recipes needed, just bake/fry them a little longer.

John Hertz was the creator of Hertz Rent a Car...but did you know he also started Yellow Cab? Hertz did a study and found the color yellow caught the attention of people more than any other color so he painted all his cabs yellow and was one of the most successful examples of branding ever in marketing.

Mentioned this a different thread. When I send mailers out to businesses I include a one dollar bill with my phone number written on it with a big magic marker. My phone assistant said it increased responses some 75% and she wanted a raise, lol.

The Rolling Stones using a pair of woman's panties as the album protector for their Sticky Fingers album. Cheech and Chong including a huge rolling paper with one of their albums...was it Big Bamboo? Both of these were great for their target markets.

Didn't Alice Cooper also have some kind of gimmick album of some kind?

Another is Oscar Meyer's Weiner Mobile. I chuckle every time I say that. Smile

I don't recall all of the specifics as I read about this strategy for piggybacking on a competitor's advertising many years ago.

The most popular furniture store on a high traffic street in a large city was running a lot of TV spots.  A competing store was located a few streets over from the popular store. The competing store spotted a high visibility building wall on the way to and near the popular store. The competing store paid the building owner for the rights to paint advertising with a competing message for their own store on the side of the building. Everyone driving to the popular store couldn't help but see the advertising (with an arrow indicating where to turn) for the competing store. The competing store was able to piggyback on the popular store's TV spots and successfully divert traffic to their own store.

In Denver in the 80s there was a mom and pop furniture store that opened. They put it right between the two biggest furniture stores in Colorado and ran a bunch of the worst, low budget TV ads you can imagine. The commercials were so bad they became a local joke.

But they were very successful as there main strategy was to capture the people traveling between the two big stores. You often hear to stay away from competition when often the exact opposite is best. If you want to open a small burger joint, do it next to a McDonalds.

BTW the couple became someone famous in Denver and were in the public a lot. There were totally dysfunctional as a couple (and as people) and went out of business....but it wasn't because their marketing concept wasn't a good one, which is go where your customers are.

Back in the 70s when record stores where popular, I heard an interview with a rock band named Romeo. They were asked how they chose that name and they said it was because alphabetically Romero came between the Rolling Stones and Linda Ronstadt (who where really big at the time) so people would find their records looking for Ronstadt and Rolling Stones albums.

I wonder if it worked?

Special editions are a good way to attract attention and squeeze more money out of a product. This is very commonly used on Kickstarter. Signed and numbered editions with a limited run is a popular way to do this. There are many ways to make a product attractive and exclusive-seeming. Limited runs of leather-bound books, special art, designer colors, etc. The way this is typically used on Kickstarter is to do very small runs and jack the price way up, and do some larger runs with the price jacked up to a lesser degree. This gives people who are not so fanatical or wealthy to wish for the really exclusive offer that they won't purchase, but still spend some extra money on something not so exclusive. Product creators might also bundle one each of the "special" products with a very exclusive one in a single offering of a mega-bundle with a ridiculous price for the uber-fanatic.

Back in the day when the Warrior Forum was owned by Allen Says I had a hard time knowing who was
more creative Him or my hero Kurt.  I am not creative.   But Allen was forever writing articles about
clever ways to market.   And you would read them with a watering mouth as they were always so good.

With that in mind here's how to get people to read anything you write.

People always need a reason why they should read.  So always start anything you write by eluding to
the fact that something amazing is ahead.

Clever pffff.   Just Allen's Secret to success lol.

Thanks Claire, I appreciate your comments but I'm not on Allen's level as a marketer and that's not false modesty. I think what I remember Allen Says most for is selling resell rights to things before that was a well-known marketing strategy. He did it in a way that made the Warrior Forum go viral in its early days.

He'd sell resell rights to someone and they'd sell that product to someone else, especially since they could keep all the money and there weren't many affiliate options in the day...and the product also included access to the WF which was private at the time. I'm trying to do something similar here with Pheeders but Allen is better at this than me.

appreciate your modesty he was one of kind.  But so are you.  You are very clever. Using resell rights to get this going is a GREAT IDEA just reread this and didn't realize you had said that. I'd be happy to push them. Working on getting your video plr right now almost there. Maybe that is a better way to market this. Still waiting to see. But now you got me thinking. I have tons of plr on my hard drive I could surely put a link in some and market them. Loving this sure glad I reread that.

The town of Indian Hills (pop 1280) here in Colorado has become a bit of a tourist destination due to their signs/memes of their community center. If you've been on social media at all, you'll probably recognize the sign and it's making Indian Hills some money.

Las Vegas casinos have done some interesting things...

Back when people used coins, the buckets for slot machines were tuned to the key of C when coins dropped because studies said that was the favorite.

Casinos tested different fragrances to see if the encourage more gambling.

The carpets and ceilings are intentionally "busy" so the distract where people look and cause them to focus more at eye level.

Ceasar's Palace has a moving sidewalk that brings people into the casino, but not out.

Gift shops have found that the bigger the level of guilt in men for what they've done in LV, the more they spend on gifts. So women should be very happy if their guy went to Vegas and just brought them a cheap souvenir. Smile

Reminds me of something my wife did. We were in Germany, a military bowling alley with one arm bandits. Her first time and only time playing. At my insistence, she put in 25 cents and she won 75 cents. She acted like a kid's first Christmas for a minute or two - abruptly went back to bowling and never looked back, lol.

Great post Kurt. Yes, it gave me an idea. I do marketing for a few local resturants that are presently open only for pick-ups and delivery. My favorite is named Yada Cafe. As shoppers and tourists approach the resturant entrance something like this will be placed in plain view. Please excuse my amateur attempt to create a pull-tag, but this is just for an idea..

One of the good things about the kid is the resturant is a a well known local family friendly atmosphere. Sometimes the kids see the adults drinking coffe out of coffee cups and also want a coffee cup. I'm going to suggest they replace the coffee with slushies, ice cream etc.

I remember in the 50s standing on the roadside in rural Indiana with my little sportcoat on holding up bittersweet for sale. I might've been in first grade at the time (went to second grade in New Jersey).

Maybe it was only due to my amazing cuteness  Cool  back then but I remember the pockets of that sportcoat bulging with coins.
