I just saw another theory which is now my favorite. The ancient Egyptians had a device kind of like a see saw they used to lift water out of rivers called a Shadoof.

Using the same tech which we know they had, only larger, they could lift the blocks of sandstone using the proper focum and only 6 average men as counter weights. The men climb up a few blocks then step off onto one end of the big shadoof and gravity does the rest. They could take the blocks straight up the sides of the pyramids without the use of any ramps.
