Passwords, quizzes and privacy - Kurt - 05-31-2020

You see a lot of those "what kind of tree am I" personality quizzes on social media as well as warnings about how these sites can use this info to help guess your passwords and security questions.

One way to be safer is not to use this kind of info in your passwords. I suggest creating a secret formula and not just a secret password.

A formula something like this:

Choose a base word where some of the special characters can be substituted for letters:
island
becomes
!$l@nd

Now add a two digit number you'll remember somewhere:
!$l@nd35

Pick a position in the string and take the first 2-3 letters of the domain and capitalize them and add them. If I were creating a password for Google, my password may be:
!GOO$l@nd35

FaceBook might be:
!FAC$l@nd35

With a formula you can have unique passwords for each site that are not only secure but you can "solve" the formula if you need to.

I do use a formula myself. Vaguely similar to what you mention.

Back in the day my base word was the person's name I woke up with, but these days  I can never remember their name. Rolleyes

Out of curiosity...what's your formula and can you let us know what your ATM pin number is while you're at it? Wink

Seriously, I don't use that same formula either. Just giving an example of a way to have a unique password for each site but still able to figure it out for each site if ever needed.

With 7 days in a week and 30 days in a month, that's a lot of names to remember!  Big Grin

I have a passphrase that is the same among all my important sites. It's a sentence that is meaningful to me and includes punctuation. The length varies but it's almost always more than 10 characters.
The prefix is an abbreviation of the site plus punctuation.
The suffix is punctuation plus which username or account this is for. For example, I have several Microsoft accounts.

A few years ago I started using LastPass and I still do. But I had to devise the above system because one time my hard password chosen by them couldn't be retrieved because their server was down or something similar I forget.
