Brownie (elf) - Brownie (elf) A brownie is a legendary kind of elf popular in folklore around England and Scotland. Customarily they are said to inhabit houses and aid in tasks around the house. However, brownies do not like to be seen and will only work at night, perhaps in exchange for small gifts or food. They usually abandon the house if their gifts are called payments, or if they are offered gifts of clothes (no matter how shabby their own clothes are). In some stories, brownies have no noses. By extension, the name of Brownie was given to the junior branch of the Girl Guides (American Girl Scouts). See also: legendary creature, elf.
Elf - Elf Elves are mythical creatures of Germanic mythology often pictured in folktales as small people with mischievous personalities. They are sometimes said to be invisible. However Elf and other terms like Fairy, Pucca, Hob, Brownie, and so forth are not clearly distinguished in English folklore, nor are similar terms in other European languages. Norse mythology knows of Light-elves (Liosálfar) who dwell in the third space in heaven, Dark-elves (Döckálfar) and Black-elves (Svartalfar), the Black-Elves being identifed with Dwarfs though in general Elves and Dwarfs are distinguished in surviving Norse literature. But about Elves (other than Black-elves/Dwarfs) little is said. They are often mentioned along with the gods, apparently as lesser spirits of nature. So little has survived that we have no idea as to whether these.
